Welcome! I am Samantha Geary, the lady making the quilts of Alberta Marie.
Tucked away in the town of McMinnville, Oregon, I work outside of my part-time job to create quilts. I have a very lovable team to keep me laughing and to pleasantly distract me from quilting: my husband and our toddler H.I. (aitch eye)
----
I love the texture of fabrics, the way colors can play with one another, the art of the fabric patterns. Quiltmaking feels like a never-ending process. There are always little itty bitty scraps to use in a new quilt. And I appreciate the camaraderie between women who sew. How refreshing to connect with an age group outside of my peers. To be able to have conversations about the process and progress of projects with women of all ages is very satisfying.
How I started sewing:
In 2011 I lost a favorite apron. I went
to the local fabric store in town to buy fabric to make a new one.
Inside the store, I was inspired by the plethora of options. I bought fabric for my apron.... and then some more. Their sale
basement was and is especially tempting. A yard or two of fabric here and there
after further visits and I officially had enough to be deemed my "Fabric
Stash."
I was living in a shared home, my room being
the only one upstairs in the "common" attic space. Lucky for me, I was
the only one to frequently use the space, so I made it into my sewing
room. The first few blankets I made were rudimentary. I didn't
know how to sew well: my seam allowances were way off, I didn't quilt
more than a few lines here and there, because I couldn't stand a line
going through the fussy-cut pictures on the fabric...
In
just that first year of sewing, I was still drawn to the fabric and the
infinite possibilities, despite my my lack of skill. That first apron that I
made, really wasn't much to be proud of. Like any other artform, with every new progress that you make, you can see the where you could have improved previously.
So I continue on.
I hope you enjoy reading about my sewing life. Although, I will admit, it's mostly pictures and sometimes lots of babbling.
Get in contact! Please! Really. Like, if you've received a blanket made by me, I'd love to see it in use. xoxo
Sam
